Top Images

Top images this season are either those created at the last moment for my Fellowship panel or are nature shots associated with our trip to Botswana. “Into the Blue”, above was created to represent a transition to/ from surrealism. The RPS assessors particularly like the fact that my reinterpretation of Magritte’s 1929 “Treachery of Images” (apparently inspired by Andre Breton statement: “Poetry is a pipe”) hang on the wall

“Magritte’s Fireplace” based on Magritte’s 1938 “Time Transfixed” but with a more modern train and no clock
The double shadows match those of the Candles and the mantlepiece itself to create an eerie sense of realism
The above images were the left and right images of the second row of the panel. The first is a straight reinterpretation of Magritte’s 1933 painting of the same name where as the latter has been given a modern context with a grim industrial backdrop
“Man with Alpine Chough”
Last image in the panel. It was at risk of being a repeat of the earlier “White Dove” image
The assessors said they are basically the same picture, but the white dove opens the panel and the black Chough closes it
I made over 1,000 exposures of this bird, which was everywhere during our skiing holiday shot with a 200mm lens at f/2.8

“Bateleur Eagle” shot in Whipsnade Wildlife park with my friend and mentor, Yin Wong, whilst I was practicing using my new 400mm f/2.8 prime lens before taking it on safari to Botswana
The soft bokeh add to the image’s pictorial appeal

“Great Grey Owl”
Also shot at Whipsnade
The tracking is fantastic, but i should have used a faster shutter speed; at least 1/4,000 at the expense of a higher ISO
“African Wild Dog with Antelope Skull”
shot in Botswana; our guide was very excited to see this as there are only 7,000 Wild Dog on the entire continent of Africa. Also called “Painted Dogs”

“Mono Hippo”
a pictorial wildlife shot
Distinctions

At hour 9,783 on 14th May 2025 I was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society. This is the Society’s highest level of distinction and is as good a determination of mastery as there is
For details of my submission and it’s assessment see my post “Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society“
New Artists
18th May: Sandro Miller – recreates iconic photographs using John Malkovich as a model (even for the picture of women) – fabulous portrait photographer
24th May: Wassily Kandinsky; not a new artist but the revelation of his 1923, “Composition VIII”, which would be my answer if asked by the TalkArt podcast team, what art work would I most like to steal?
